Let the salt pour jumblejunkie, let it pour! Yes, I am another one of those angry Blizzard guys complaining about the new Diabio 3 game that was released on Tuesday.

Let the salt pour jumblejunkie, let it pour! Yes, I am another one of those angry Blizzard guys complaining about the new Diabio 3 game that was released on Tuesday. Now, I can’t say I was a huge Diablo guy but I did enjoy the original two games a lot. Seems like over the years, I was getting more and more hype for this game. Now its here, in my hands, and pretty much unplayable. I am salty…

Now I know that there are SEVERAL issues with this game. My issue is much different then they typical server issues and errors people are getting. Yes, I am trying to PC game on a Mac. People are going to say that that is my issue, “Don’t try to game on a Mac”. World of Warcraft runs flawlessly on my Mac with zero issues. Even Steam works amazing! Hardware is similar, it just comes down to software.

The issue I am having is that the FPS (frames per second) are god awful! Now, I know its not my computer. It meets the system requirements and Diablo 3 is not a power house for graphics. For some reason, if you have a NVIDA 9400 video card, you will be forced to play in 800×600, everything on low, hard to ready blurry text and LUCKY if you get 15 FPS. The Blizzard forums are fuming with people with the same issue. Not only my video card, but it seems like Mac users all around are effected with ungodly low FPS.

Either fix it, or tell people ahead of time that a 2-3 year old iMac isn’t gonna cut it (kinda BS). Sad thing is, people are bootcamp-ing their Macs into Windows and running the game flawlessly with the same hardware. Right now it sucks to be a Mac user. Why is the Mac so unloved for gaming?

My TOP 5 iOS Games

Who would of thought that these cheap iOS games would take off? Who would of thought that they are actually pretty good? Not me! I will admit that I am more of a “physical copy” guy when it comes to gaming, but even I admit, I shell out pliantly when it comes to digital games. Since I’ve had my iPhone, I have downloaded a ton of games. There are some great iOS games that should not be missed! Here are my top 5 that I have and play.

1.) Street Fighter IV VOLT – Now I have 2 version of SF4 on my iPhone, both are great! I actually paid 9.99 for SF4 when it came out! Volt is like the “Super” version of SF4 on iOS. The game actually looks and plays fantastic for a touch screen fighter. The touch screen joystick takes some getting use to, but its pretty good with some practice. This one cost like 5 bucks when I got it, but its so worth it. (It goes on sale all the time)

2.) Dragon’s Lair – This laser disc arcade classic on iOS for a buck, how can anyone go wrong here? Anyone that has played the arcade knows how brutal it is in difficulty. The timing is still tricky on some parts, but the flashing buttons make your life SOOOO much easier! Go save the Princess already!

3.) Mirror’s Edge – I enjoyed the 360 version of Mirror’s Edge, but not enough to get the iOS game. Boy was I wrong! This game kicks ass in every way! Its platform-y but still with all those cool Mirror’s Edge jumping from building to building like obstacles. Very unique and has responsive controls! Not to mention that it has a pretty sweet soundtrack as well.

4.) iStunt2 – I bought this randomly and was surprised how great this game is. Terrible game name, but a really sweet snowboarding game. You use the axis controls to move your guy around and use touch controls for jumping and board grabs. Pliantly of loop-de-doop rail action and avoiding huge saw blade fun here!

5.) Tiny Wings – Probably the most popular game on my list. Seems like if there is a bird in the game, its going to be popular! There isn’t much to this game, but it is so addicting! You use your chubby bird and utilize hills to pick up speed and launch your self. You keep going as far as you can before the sun goes down. Its a tricky game to explain, but trust me, its addicting!

WOW! It’s crazy that the X-Box is already 10 years old! It only felt like yesterday when I walked into a game store to play the new Microsoft console with quite possibly the largest controllers ever! I was a little late on the game when the X-Box came out. I had friends that had them and raved about how amazing it was. At the time I was a massive PC gamer which blinded me from the console market for a while.

It wasn’t until X-Box had a Sega bundle that the light bulb went off in my head! When Dreamcast died, a little bit of me died inside (I’m so emo), hence why I went primarily PC gaming. But to see Sega games on another console totally sucked me in, and I am glad it did. I played hours of Jet Grind Radio Future and Sega GT. From there I was totally hooked and the X-box was my preferred console of choice at the time. And when Shuemue 2 was released on the X-box, the shit hit the fan!

I might not be the biggest Microsoft fan these days (Apple fanboy here), but I absolutely love their consoles. This was definitely a great console and I am glad it was a big enough hit to have the 360 come right after it. The X-Box is a beefy console, but it’s for sure a console you want in your collection!

And then expert mode, will I ever finish this game?

One of the games I picked up on launch of the 3DS was Steel Diver. A lot of people had some harsh words for this game but I really wanted to believe that it would be great. The concept is pretty neat. Controlling a submarine using the touch screen, hunting ships secretly in enemy waters, mapping out grids with turn based strategic battles! Then, flipping through Nintendo Power I saw the screen shots of periscope mode, they looked awesome. I imagined taping a button on the touch screen while hunting an enemy ship peering at the water surface. How cool that would be? Giant oceans with sea creatures, reefs to discover, a huge 3D environment and 360-degree gyroscope controls! I couldn’t wait to play it. I was so excited.

So, I brought it home on day one with Pilot Wings Resort. Pushing Pilot Wings aside, I looked at the box. The details of the art on the packaging impressed me. I opened the box to take a look at the instructions. Warnings blah blah blah, then Page Six “Message to new recruits” dated March 27, 2011 (release day of the 3DS). Corny I will admit, but if they went into that kind of detail on the manual I couldn’t wait to see what the game had in store.

I popped it in and turned it on. The music was fitting and the graphics were nice. I turned the 3D on full blast and the ocean looked beautiful. I then started the first mission with the first sub. The controls were a bit hard to get use to at first. The submarines were slow to respond making it more real I guess. After the first mission was completed, I was treated to 30 seconds of periscope mode. I won some decals but wasn’t really sure what they were for. I played mission two then three and four. It was all very much the same. A short 2D side-scrolling game with 30 seconds of periscope mode. I must say I was a bit disappointed. I put it away to play with some of the online software the 3DS had to offer.

The next day, I tried out Steel Commander mode. It was much better than the missions but also was short and repetitive. I put Steel Diver down again. I played it some more over the next few weeks, unlocking all the missions and then completing them all with the first sub. I continued with the second sub and then with the third. I left the last mission without completing it and shelved the game.

It sat on my game shelf for a few months until this weekend. I decided this game was not going to sit unfinished any longer. So, I pulled it out and failed several times trying to complete the last mission with the last sub. Two hours later, I finally beat it! Yay! I was so happy. Then after the credits rolled, a screen popped up and said “Expert Mode Unlocked.” What?

All seven mission were back in expert with all 3 subs available to play. All new content was added so I hopped into the first mission, and wow it was hard. I couldn’t believe I didn’t play all the way through the game earlier. There is so much more to be had. Don’t get me wrong, I like Steel Diver, I think it’s a good concept. The execution of the game, however, makes it mediocre. I am not sure I will ever finish the game on expert mode because I do find it a bit of a chore to play. Nevertheless, it’s a new idea and Nintendo took a risk. Just like I took a risk on it too.

It delivers exactly what it promises —- it makes you feel like you are controlling a submarine. The sad is the game is bare bones and doesn’t have much player value. It’s going back on my shelf for now, and maybe some day I will be in the mood to go from Submarine Captain to Expert Submarine Captain.

On November 16th a new game came out, Skylanders Spyro's Adventure. It's made by Activision and features a new peripheral not yet seen, toys!

On November 16th a new game came out, Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure. It’s made by Activision and features a new peripheral not yet seen, toys! Not just any toys though really nicely detailed action figures. The gimmick here is these figures “come to life” in the game. It’s neat because they save all treasure, moves and experience you learn while playing. I first learned about Skylanders in Nintendo Power they had an article about it in the July issue this year. The concept really had me interested I knew it would either be great or horrible. Turns out it is awesome. Now I happened to pick up the 3DS version of this game. It retails for $69.99 and comes with the game, 3 Skylanders figures to start out with and a portal. It even included batteries! It’s also out for every current generation console including PC and Mac.

The console version of the game plays similar to gauntlet. Your characters can’t jump but still move through the levels. They collect treasure and learn new moves. It also has a two player vs. mode which is a lot of fun. The 3DS version is completely different and personally I think it is the better of the two games. First difference is that it’s a full 3D platform game. It looks really good and plays really well. Now it’s not perfect. It has is flaws and in the time I have spent with it, I have found some invisible walls (something you don’t see too much of any more) and for a 3DS game it has loading times which I found to be strange and a bit annoying. Other than that, it’s great! Another quick note is that the 3DS version of the game comes with an exclusive Dark Spyro figures a nice little added incentive. The expandability of the game is a really nice feature too. New play sets with additional levels are available and ready to be added to the current game. Yes, I realize this is a cash cow for Activision, but hey they got my money and I have to say it was worth the expense. The game is fun and addictive. If you are looking for a nice 3D platformer for the 3DS here is one to keep you busy for a little while.

2011 has proven to be a mighty year for games. Games that pop into my head like Portal 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 3 have knocked my socks off! With it now being mid October, we still have a BUTT load of games to come before 2011 comes to an end! This is my list of my personal game I will be buying day 1!

1. King of Fighters XIII – Even though KOF12 was noted as failure, I still enjoyed the game. I think what hurt me the most was the ungodly broken online (that never got fixed) and the limited single player. KOF13 comes out guns blazing with tons of modes, huge roster, tweaked engine, and everything 12 should of been! Atlus has taken the torch and will be publishing it for us here in the states. Pre-order this and get a sweet 4 disc soundtrack!

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Oblivion was amazing, so how could I not get the sequel? This game looks freakin’ gorgeous! I have a soft spot for fantasy type games where I can build my character to my liking. I can already tell that this game will consume many, many hours of my life and disturb any other games I am playing. Random flying dragons that will own my butt? Sign me up!

3. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – Yeah, yeah, yeah, less than a year and we have ANOTHER MVC3 game?! I know, people get mad at Capcom for milking us but seriously, MVC3 was badass! Even though I suck at the game, I still enjoy the living crap out of it. Why wouldn’t I want more characters, tweaks, and anything else Capcom is going to throw our way? Its gonna be interesting, that’s for sure!

Honorable Mentions (AKA maybe’s) – Sonic Generations, Zelda Skyward Sword, and Battlefield 3

On March 27th, 2011 one of the most exciting things happened in portable gaming.

It went 3D! At first, this sounded amazing and unbelievable, and after watching the faces of thousands of people try the 3DS I finally got to see it for myself.

I picked up my system around noon and decided to go out for lunch. Sitting and waiting at a restaurant was a bad idea. I couldn’t wait to crack it open. So I did, which led to one of the worst voiceovers in Youtube history. When I pulled the 3DS out of the box and turned it on, my first thought was ‘Wow. It’s in 3D. That’s awesome.” Then about 30 seconds later I started to see some of the problems.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this little system. It goes everywhere with me every day. If nothing else, I at least use my daily play coins and walk my Nintendog (the Nintendog will need to wait for a whole other blog post some day.)

Like half of the people who picked up a 3DS on launch day, I bought the Cosmos Black system. I will say the hardware looks sexy. It has the right feel and it sparkles. You can never go wrong with sparkles. The analogue slide pad is much better than I expected, and Nintendo made the buttons both mushy and clicky to please everyone. (I am a fan of the clicky buttons myself.) The 3D slider works great. My only complaint is that it feels like it might fall off. The dock was a nice accessory, and I love that it uses the same charger as the DSi.

I think the telescoping stylus is a nice touch, but I found the placement to be a bit off at first. That has grown on me, and I now have trouble finding the stylus on my DSi XL.

The AR Cards are also a neat idea. It wasn’t long before I was pulling dragons out of everywhere. Faceraiders was a huge surprise as well, and I think it’s a fun built-in game. The Mii picture maker makes me laugh and made my Mii look more realistic. Find Mii and Puzzle swap are also great ideas, and I play them both to this day.

The friends list is also great. It’s missing a chat feature that would make it complete, but its much improved from the old Friend Code system.

Overall, the 3DS is a good package.

What’s holding it back?

First off is the sweet spot. For the 3D to work, you have to look at the screen at just the right angle. Once you’re there it looks great, but if you look away everything blurs. The problem renders the gyroscope (or motion) controls useless with 3D games.

My second complaint is the launch lineup. It wasn’t great. Probably the wrost yet for any Nintendo system launch. I picked up Pilotwings Resort and Steel Diver, both of which I enjoyed.

The 3DS grows on me more and more each day. I am waiting for some key titles to come out and for the ambassador program to finish (I’ll leave that topic for later).

If you don’t own one and you enjoyed the DS what are you waiting for? There is at least one game out there for everyone and a slew more are coming down the pipe.

Still not convinced? What about that $100 price drop? You can’t get a better deal on new hardware. So get off you butt, go buy one and enjoy.

Things are bound to get crazy this episode as we are joined by two returning guests Tim “JumbleJunkie” and RobMan. Pete has to sit this episode out as he is on vacation in Mordor. More of an episode description coming soon, I need to listen to this myself…but first I need to destroy the One Ring, brb.

About 6 mins in was a forgotten gem from the jumblejunkie library which was the Wrestlemania Skit where my friend and I played cheesy commentators. I also played the part as Macho Man and my YouTube friend, Fijberto, played Iron Sheik.

With the passing of Macho Man Randy Savage, I wanted to dig this up from the jumblejunkie archives and show some of my new viewers that might of not seen this 2 years ago. I know its already "on youtube" but its topical, and its one of my favorite moments from my channel even though the green screen is HORRENDOUS!!

This EP continues to show the stuff that makes BTBAM so badass! Nothing to out of the ordinary for them, but they continue to amaze me with amazing song writing and musicianship.

I thought this day would never come where I would be reviewing a NEW Atari Teenage Riot record! I had the privilege to get an early listen of the new Atari Teenage Riot record called, Is This Hyperreal? They are back and back with that same digital hardcore intensity we all remember from the 90s. Is This Hyperreal? is a more mature, straightforward attempt compared to their earlier workings. Nic Endo is a leader when it comes to the vocals and I can’t help but praise the production. This 10 track album will sure fulfill your digital hardcore needs. Highly recommended!

Jumblejunkie takes 2nd place in Donkey Kong @ VGO/NEACF Fall Tournament

This was my first tournament I have attended since I have been in the arcade/arcade collecting scene. It was more of a tournament of friends and collectors, but some of the pros came out and joined in which was really cool. Even dudes from “The King of Kong” movie were there as well which made my fanboy status go through the roof! We played games like Time Pilot, Galaxian, Track & Field, Turbo, Bagman, Paragon pinball and Donkey Kong. I was the second to go on Donkey Kong and put up a score of 162,500 which landed me 2nd place. I held the lead until the very last guy to go who is a veteran in the arcade scene. Very close scores in the top 3! Overall it was a great time and John over at the Video Game Outsiders podcast deserves a big pat on the back for organizing this and putting together a fun tournament.

Soul Calibur 2
Manufacture: Namco
Year: 2002

How I got this game: Good ol’ Craigslist

Why I got it: Soul Calibur 2 was actually my first arcade machine I bought back in early 2009. This was also my most expensive game I’ve ever bought. They always say your first arcade game is your most expensive! I was toying with the idea of getting an arcade game for a long time before I finally convinced my parents (I lived at home at the time) to let me get one and keep it in the garage. Soul Calibur 2 is hands down my favorite Soul Calibur game. This was my gateway into the arcade addiction!

WHY I SOLD IT: Trust me, it was not easy letting this cab go. Being my first game, it had a lot of sentimental value to me. I still love the game (I actually kept the PCB and sold the cab)! When it came down to it, this game was a conversion from a Mortal Kombat 2. I am not the biggest fan of the Midway cabinets. Eventually I’d like to get a nice dedicated Namco cab to house the Soul Calibur 2 PCB along with some Tekken classics.

Phoenix (cocktail)
Manufacture: Centuri
Year: 1980

How I got this game: This was another warehouse raid (sorta) game. An arcade friend of mine made a contact with an old operator that was looking to get rid of all his games. Part of the deal was that ALL GAMES MUST GO! Everyone picked what they wanted from a list and made offers on machines. There were a ton that interested me, just space was an issue with me. I’ve always toyed with the idea of a cocktail cab. I went blind on this one with out really seeing it and knowing if it worked really.

Why I got it: Phoenix is one of my favorite shooter arcade games. Its looked over alot, but I think its one of the best and most challenging. I played it a lot on my 60-in-1 and have toyed with getting a dedicated Phoenix cab.

WHY I SOLD IT: I had this game for literately a week! Ultimately, the game wasn’t going to fit where I wanted it to and the game was a little rough. I could horde it, but I sold it for what I payed for it. Someone else will appreciate it more than me where it probably would sit outside of the arcade and not get played very much.

Thunder Blade
Manufacture: SEGA
Year: 1987

How I got this game: Kind of a funny story how this game came into my arcade. I went to a warehouse raid about a year ago when I was picking up my Kung Fu Master, and this was also one of the games there. An arcade friend of mine ended up getting this game. I originally passed on it because I didn’t have a picture of it and didn’t want to risk it in case it was the full size sit down model (no room!). Fast forward a year later, I messaged my arcade friend to see if he still had the game. It was sitting in his garage doing nothing, so he offered to give it to me for free if I helped him move 4 of his games in his basement. While moving the first game (which was Xevious), his hand slipped and I went for a ride down a flight of stairs with the cab. Luckily I was alright and I was able to bring Thunder Blade home in one piece!

Why I got it: I am obviously a huge Sega fan. I love Thunder Blade on the Sega Master System and Super Thunder Blade on the Genesis. I think Thunder Blade is a really underrated game. Also I love the small Sega arcade cabarets, they are pretty hard to find.
